MRI scan

MRI is short for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The machine takes a clear picture of your brain using radio frequency waves.

The picture shows which areas of your brain have been affected by your stroke.

Some people have to have an injection of dye which makes the picture clearer.

A woman about to have an MRI scan

"You may feel a bit closed in. Here's a buzzer to press if you need help."

You have to lie absolutely still for a long time: perhaps half an hour.

Some MRI machines make a loud knocking noise.
