What causes stroke?
Damage to blood vessels can be caused by:
- high blood pressure (hypertension)
- heart problems
- arteries getting older
- high cholesterol levels in the blood.
You may be more likely to have a stroke if you:
- smoke
- do little exercise
- drink a lot of alcohol
- eat a fatty diet
- are overweight
- have diabetes
- are older
- have a family history of stroke.
